"Journey to Work" Program

With the increased use of electronic communication students are exhibiting a lack of strong and effective interpersonal communication skills. Effective communication skills are essential in the work place and should be reinforced in a safe, fun and learning enriched environment. Our “Journey to Work” program consists of four two hour sessions designed to help students develop useful skills for work interviews, college interviews and relationship building with adults. Upon completion, each student will receive a “Journey to Work” program certificate.

Session Objectives:

Effective Communication Skills - Identify poor communication skills, Discuss uncomfortable situations and how to handle them, Provide basic conflict resolution techniques, State the importance of the first impression, Describe and discuss positive communication skills, Eye contact, Reflective listening, It’s not WHAT you say…it’s HOW you say it, Body Language.

Time Management Principles - Identify goals and objectives, Differentiate between “LIKE TO DO” and “HAVE TO DO”, Developing tools for managing priorities.

The Nuts & Bolts of a Resume - Determine the importance of hobbies, volunteer experience, academic successes, Relate your interests to a job, Examine classified adds and local job opportunities, Assess job requirements to your skills, Create a resume.

Basic Interviewing Techniques - Discuss the importance of dressing appropriately for an interview, Review the basic principles of an effective interview, Handshake, Tardiness, Reflective listening, Honesty, honesty, honesty, Storytelling, Role play an interview, Relate the importance of proper follow-up after the interview.
